INTERVIEW WITH RENÉ PEÑA IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE PHOT'AIX FESTIVAL

 Interview conducted by Uprising during the Phot'Aix photography festival, which took place in the city of Aix-en-Provence, France, in November 2012.

 

The selection of photographs of you that are on Phot'Aix includes mostly color photographs. But you worked a lot in black and white.

 

I worked in black and white for a long time, black and white was my vocabulary. Imagine that for your speaking you have a thousand words and suddenly you find a box that you can have with you and that has a thousand more words. Color has more words than black and white. The color is richer. Black and white at one point helped me to say what I wanted. I could have continued working in black and white but I do have a better tool, which is color, because I was going to limit my speech due to a technical problem. Photography is a medium that I handle well, changing the medium is like changing a language, if you want to express yourself, do it with your language.
