Montalván graduated in sculpture and drawing from the Academia de Bellas Artes “San Alejandro”, La Habana.

Montalván graduated in sculpture and drawing from the Academia de Bellas Artes “San Alejandro”, La Habana. His first solo show was in Havana in 1995, entitled Puerta del espíritu (Door of the spirit), and was followed by Los cimientos del alma (Foundations of the Soul), El dolor de la existencia (The pain of existence), Opportun (Timely), CDAV, Correspondencia, Rouen, and Memoire dans la peau (Memory in the skin), Galería La Casona, La Habana. He won a scholarship in Florida for his installation Misa Negra and has exhibited widely in group shows in France, Spain and Cuba. He lives and works between Cuba and France.
